His Name is Steven Baboun. Also recognized as a Visual artist and Art director as I got Steven to accept and do this interview with us, we got to know a couple of things about him.
Here's the scoop:
Ticaye - WHO IS sTEVEN bABOUN? steven- I'M Steven Baboun, a visual artist, PHOTOGRAPHER, AND ART DIRECTOR. my biggest thrill, if you want to call it that, is to tell stories that make people feel , question and evoke powerful emotions.
ticaye - WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? Steven- i grew up in the best city in the world... Port-au-prince!!!
ticaye - wAS ART EXPOSED TO YOU DURING YOUR CHILDHOOD? steven- Growing up, i was surrounded by studio art. my cousins were painters, my uncle was a painter. i was always intrigued when they painted because they took what was in thier mind and vomited onto this canvas. as i got older, i started gravitating toward mixed media and multimedia like video and photography. i stuck to photography.
ticaye - WHAT CAMERA DO YOU USE & WHY? steven- i use a canon 5d. i love my little camera becuase it shoots great photos and you have more control over the settings when you shoot video, which is super important to me as i start translating my concepts onto video.
ticaye - WHO WOULD YOU SAY is YOUR INFLUENCEr? steven- this is a tough question... i'm influenced by so many things , not just people. i'm influenced by sex, love, relationships, color, my friends, hardships, joy, glitter, laughter. Literally I can see a cockroach on the wall and i start conceptualizing an idea. as for people, photographer robert mapplethorpe is one of my influences. he taught me how to take self-portraits and turn vulnerability into dynamic storytelling. i am also influenced by the work of photographer deana lawson, the way she caputured foliage and human skin is gorgeous. she's my ultimate hero.
ticaye - Among your works, which one would you say is your favorite? steven- My favorite piece ? hum... i think my favorite changes everyday, but so far i really am proud of the photo i took in my bathtub. where i turned it into a flower jungle and photographed myself in it. i don't know... that photo encompasses all that i am as an artist and it was the first time i felt 100% complete while taking a photo. it was very much a spiritual experience.
ticaye -what inspires you the most throughout your photography journey? steven- I think my friends and family inspires me the most, i know that sounds super clichè, i feed off positive energy and when i see the support and love coming from genuine people, it keeps me going. it can be hard being an artist and devoting your life to art. at times you often feel lonely or hopeless, but my friends and family push me to keep creating because they know i was brought to this earth to tell the stories i'm telling.
ticaye - if so, do you deal with hate or discouragement from anyone while doing what you enjoy? steven- hate is unavoidable. i do get a lot of hate messages because soemtimes people feel uncomfortable with my photos or the messages behind them , which is Exactly what i want (haha!). but i never give people who hate the time of the day... it just makes me want to creat more. yes, it hurt when they say nasty things but atleast they're talking about you and your work!
Blog bonus question - how does an original day of photo shooting goes for steven? steven- a day of shooting with steven ? lots of flowers, glitter, and random shit. all jokes aside, i try to create a safe and positive environment during my shoots. i always tell the people i am shooting to be themselves, open up, let loose, and tell their stories, However which way they want. every shoot is different but i try to make it a party everytime.
ticaye - Thank you for your time and giving us the opportunity to interview you. steven- Hope these answers help!
